When I traveled to Corfu, I thought that it wasn´t full of insta places I would find everywhere. Articles and tips about Corfu town were hard to find, and even if I found them, very similar things were mentioned. Therefore, I decided that this article will recommend what to see right in the capital city and close to it. As Corfu is a small island, everything is very close, but sometimes the journey takes an hour.

Keď som išla na Korfu, mala som pocit, že to nie je veľmi instaplace, ktoré nájdem všade. Dosť ťažko sa hľadali články a tipy a ak som ich aj našla, spomínali sa veľmi podobné veci. Preto som sa rozhodla, že tento článok bude odporúčať čo vidieť priamo v hlavnom meste a hneď blízko neho. Keďže je Korfu malý ostrov, je všetko veľmi blízko, no predsa niekedy cesta trvá aj hodinu.

After arriving in Corfu, we stayed directly in the capital city - Kerkyra (Corfu Town). We chose to place due to its and good connections to the airport and around the island. If you are a type that likes to explore, this is a great choice. In the evening you will have good nightlife and during the day you can travel around the island to various beaches.

Po príchode na Korfu sme sa ubytovali priamo v hlavnom meste Kerkyra (Corfu town). Tento výber sme zvolili kvôli blízkosti k letisku a dobrým spojom. Z hlavného mesta sa dostanete kdekoľvek, keďže všetky spoje začínajú práve tu. Ak ste typ, ktorý rád objavuje, je to skvelá voľba. Večer zažívate poriadny nočný život a cez deň môžete cestovať po ostrove na rôzne pláže.

And what to see right in the capital city? Our landlord told us that we also need 3 days for the capital. I think that if you don't have a problem walking a lot, it takes one or two days.

A čo vidieť priamo v hlavnom meste? Náš ubytovateľ nám hovoril, že na hlavné mesto potrebujeme aj 3 dni. Ja si myslím, že ak nemáte problém veľa chodiť, postačí jeden až dva dni.

Old Town / Centrum mesta 

We lived right in the center of Corfu itself, which turned out as a good choice. We had everything a few minutes from us. The center consists of various streets, lined with typical houses and tiles, as we have mostly in Europe. Already in the morning, you hear the Greeks greet each other, but this does not apply to the opening of shops. Like all Southerners, the Greeks have time and we were often the only ones to walk around the center at 9 am. In this old town, there are many churches and beautiful buildings, as well as souvenirs, restaurants, bars or smaller groceries or fruit markets.

My sme bývali priamo v centre samotného Corfu, čo sa ukázalo ako dobrý výber. Všetko sme mali pár minút od nás. Centrum tvoria rôzne uličky, vyskladané z typických domčekov a dlaždíc, ako sme v Európe zvyknutý. Už v ranných hodinách počujete Grékov ktorý sa zdravia, ale to neplatí o otvorení obchodov. Ako všetci Južania, aj Gréci majú čas a často sme boli jediný, ktorý o 9:00 chodili po centre. V tomto starom meste sa nachádza množstvo kostolikov a pekných stavieb, taktiež suveníry, reštaurácie, bary či menšie potraviny alebo zelovoc.

Old and new Fortress / Staré a nové hradby

The new and old city walls are one of those that will catch your attention right away. You can get to the new walls free of charge and apart from the beautiful view, there is not much to find there. You will walk a little more by the old walls. Here again, you will find a beautiful view, the history of the city or a few frescoes. But here you pay for entry around 7 €. At the very top, there is also a lighthouse and just behind the entrance, there is a smaller museum that offers frescoes, tiles, or other things that have been found.

Nové a staré hradby mesta sú jedným z tých, ktoré zaujimu vašu pozornosť hneď. Na nové opevnenie sa dostanete bezplatne a okrem krásneho výhľadu tam veľa nenájdete. Pri starých hradbách sa nachodíte o čosi viac. Opäť tu nájdete krásny výhľad, históriu mesta, či pár fresiek. Tu si ale zaplatíte za vstup okolo 7€. Na samom vrchu sa nachádza aj maják a tesne za vstupom menšie múzeum, ktoré ponúka fresky, dlažby či iné veci, ktoré boli nájdené.

Museum of Asian art and Military museum

Múzeum Ázijského umenia a Vojenské múzeum

These two museums stand side by side and are connected by their garden. This garden is really beautiful, but we weren't in museums. If you are a lover of Asia or military history, it will be definitely worth it. But if it doesn't give you anything, just look at these museums from the outside.

Tieto dve múzea stoja vedľa seba a prepája ich záhrada. Táto záhrada je naozaj nádherná, ale v múzeách sme neboli. Ak ste milovníkmi ázie, či vojenskej histórie, určite sa to oplatí. No pokiaľ vám to nič nedáva, tak tieto múzea si stačí pozrieť zvonku.

Anemomilos

It is located about a 20-minute walk from the Kerkyra or 2 bus stops. There is a beautiful mill and a lighthouse and it would be a perfect place to take pictures if the locals did not create a beach here. We came here at sunset when they were slowly picking up all their belongings and we could at least see the mill without bathing people.

Nachádza sa približne 20minút peši od Hlavného mesta, alebo 2 zastávky autobusom. Je tu krásny mlyn aj maják a bolo by to dokonale miesto na fotenie, ak by si tu domáci nevytvorili pláž. My sme sem prišli na západ Slnka, kedy si pomaly zberali všetci svoje veci a my sme mohli aspoň trošku vidieť mlyn bez kúpajúcich sa ľudí.

Panagia Vlacheron Church

This church is one you see in the sea when landing on Corfu. It is a nice, typically Greek white church, which is tucked into the sea. There is a beautiful setting for photos, enjoying lunch or dinner and from there you will also see the island of Pontikonisi, where you get for a trip.

Tento kostolík je jedným, ktorý vidíte v mori pri pristávaní na Korfu. Je milým, typicky grécky bielym kostolom, ktorý je vsunutý do mora. Je tu krásne prostredie na fotky, vychutnanie si obeda, či večere a uvidíte odtiaľ aj ostrov Pontikonisi, na ktorý sa robia rýchle výlety.

A few tips to conclude:

1. Corfu long-distance bus station is outside the city center

2. In Corfu, buses are divided into lines that run close to the capital and those that run all over the island. You need to be careful.

3. There are kind people, but not everyone knows English, so you often couldn´t help you even if you ask

4. Visit restaurants and businesses where you see that there are enough people. It is a guarantee of tasty food and great drink

5. As you walk through the alleys, look into the nooks and crannies and you will find beautiful shops from local manufacturers.

Pár tipov na záver:

1. Korfu stanica diaľkových autobusov je mimo centra mesta

2. Na Korfu sú autobusy rozdelené na linky, ktoré chodia blízko hlavného mesta a na tie, ktoré chodia po celom ostrove. Treba si na to dávať pozor.

3. Sú tu milý ľudia, no nie každý vie po anglicky a teda sa často nedozviete nič aj keď sa pýtate

4. Navštevujte reštaurácie a podniky kde vidíte, že je dosť ľudí. Je to záruka chutného jedla a skvelého pitia

5. Pri prechádzaní uličkami sa pozerajte aj do zákutí a nájdete krásne obchodíky lokálnych výrobcov.
