Nicosia is the capital city of Cyprus and we were also fascinated by the fact that it is the only capital in the world split between two countries. This city is located in southern and northern Cyprus. How can we don´t visit it when we were less than 60 km from the city. We traveled here from Larnaca by bus and the journey took only about an hour.
We got off at the main bus station and from there we went straight to the viewpoint of the Shacolas Tower Museum. You only pay € 2.5 for this prospect and see the whole city from there. Although the city seemed a bit larger, we decided to walk through it.
Vystúpili sme na hlavnej autobusovej stanici a odtiaľ sme sa vybrali priamo k vyhliadke Shacolas Tower múzeum. Za túto vyhliadku zaplatíš len 2,5 € a uvidíš odtiaľ celé mesto. Aj keď mesto sa nám zdalo trošku rozľahlejšie, rozhodli sme sa ho prejsť pešo.
From this viewpoint, we walked to the most famous street in Nicosia. There are many famous shops and snacks on Ledras Street. At the end of this street is the border that divides the city but also the whole of Cyprus into two countries. To get to the Turkish side of Cyprus, you need to go through customs control at the airport and also show your passport, without it you aren´t allowed to be there, as the Turkish side does not belong to the European Union.
Z vyhliadky sme sa prešli až k najznámejšej ulici v Nikózii. Na ulici Ledras je mnoho známych obchodov a občerstvení. Na konci tejto ulice je hranica, ktorá delí mesto ale aj celý Cyprus na dve krajiny. Na prechod na tureckú stranu Cypru je potrebné prejsť colnou kontrolou ako na letisku a tiež ukázať cestovný pas, bez ktorého vás tam nepustia, keďže turecká strana nepatrí do Európskej únie.
Right after crossing the border, we noticed a difference. There is the influence of Turkish culture but also quite desolate streets outside the main attractions. The most famous is Buyuk Han, which is characterized by its architecture and great restaurants. Unfortunately, it is not possible to pay in euros on the Turkish side and it is necessary to change the money into Turkish lyres before buying. After enjoying the unique Buyuk Han, we wanted to walk around a bit more. But we didn't feel very safe, so we went back to the Greek side.
Hneď to prechode cez hranicu sme si všimli rozdiel. Je tam vidieť vplyv tureckej kultúry ale aj dosť spustošené ulice mimo hlavných atrakcií. Najznámejšou je Buyuk Han, ktorý je typický svojou architektúrou a skvelými reštauráciami. Bohužiaľ na tureckej strane sa nedá platiť eurami a pred kúpou je treba si zmeniť peniaze na turecké lýry. Potom ako sme sa pokochali jedinečným Buyuk Han sme sa chceli ešte trochu poprechádzať po okolí. No necítili sme sa veľmi bezpečne a tak sme sa vrátili naspäť na grécku stranu.
The Greek side is much more European and closer to us. And since we still had a few hours to walk around the city, we chose to look at a few monuments in the area. Paphos gateway was the first gate from the city. There were several of these gates and together they formed the walls of the city. They all beautifully completed the atmosphere of the city.
Grécka strana je omnoho európskejšia a nám bližšia. A keďže sme mali ešte pár hodín času na prechádzku po meste vybrali sme sa obzrieť pár pamiatok v okolí. Ako prvou bolo Paphos brána od mesta. Týchto brán tu bolo viacero a spolu tvorili hradby k mestu. Všetky krásne dotvárali atmosféru mesta.
Even after a long walk through the city, we still had plenty of time to go back, but there are many museums and monuments. But we chose to see the somewhat unconventional Museum Classik Motorcycle Museum. This museum is full of beautiful veterans of motorcycles and cars, which the owner has procured himself and is still trying to repair and store as many of these cars as possible. And so it was an amazing place as he knows a lot about every piece in his museum but he is also very nice and hospitable.
Aj po dlhšej prechádzke cez mesto sme stále mali dosť času do odchodu naspäť ale múzeí a pamiatok tu je neúrekom. No my sme sa vybrali pozrieť si trochu netradičné múzeum Classik Motorcycle Museum. Toto múzeum je plné krásnych veteránov motoriek a aut, ktoré majiteľ sám obstaral a stále sa snaží opravovať a uchovávať čo naviac týchto aut. A preto to bolo úžasne miesto keďže o každom kúsku vo svojom múzeum vie naozaj veľa ale tiež je veľmi milý a pohostinný.
